It’s impossible to measure the impact that childhood cancer has on children and their families, but research-funding decisions are often based on numbers. Here are some facts about childhood cancer for you to consider:
- Cancer is the leading cause of death by disease in children and adolescents in the United States. (Source: National Cancer Institute)

COG Treatment Centers
Research has shown that children and adolescents treated at specialized children’s cancer centers, as opposed to local hospitals, have a better outcome. Specialized children’s cancer centers are hospitals with trained oncology healthcare teams that are dedicated to improving the diagnosis and treatment of child and adolescent cancers. Most provide treatment for children from birth to 19 years of age, with some extending pediatric cancer care to age 21.
Across the United States, more than 200 children’s cancer centers that have met the quality assurance standards established by the National Cancer Institute (NCI) comprise a network of hospitals known as the Children’s Oncology Group (COG). This group of institutions work together to implement improved therapies, developed through collaborative clinical-translational research, including large-scale clinical trials that are funded by the NCI. Treatment protocols that are developed through the COG’s clinical trial research network ensure that children with similar diagnoses treated at COG institutions will receive the same treatment, regardless of where they live in the U.S.
On January 2, 2011, Dr. Peter Adamson MD assumed the five year position as Chair of the COG. Elected to this position by more than 5,000 childhood cancer Principal Investigators, clinicians, and childhood cancer experts, Dr. Adamson will play a key role in leading the future direction of basic, clinical, and translational pediatric oncology research. Dr. Adamson will continue his position as Chief of the Division of Clinical Pharmacology and Therapeutics at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia, PA. Dr. Adamson’s expertise and passion in clinical-translational research offers hope for the development of new types of molecular-targeted therapies to treat child and adolescent cancer.
